The first is Caine's
autobiography. "Elephant" refers to Caine's former residence in London,
"Elephant and Castle." Richard Wright was obviously alluding to
Dostoevsky. Wright was able to rub elbows with Gertrude Stein and Albert
Camus. Wright and Ralph Ellison were important African American writers.
